Why You Should Insure Your Golf Cart

Golf carts are not just for golf courses anymore.

Around Wichita, Derby, Andover, Goddard, and plenty of neighborhoods in between, golf carts have become the unofficial summer shuttle. People use them to take kids to the pool, run over to a neighbor’s house, or take a slow loop around the block after dinner. Some families also use them the old-fashioned way, which is to actually play golf.

They feel casual.  They feel fun.  They feel utterly harmless...until they're not.

Here is the thing. A golf cart may not be a car, but it can absolutely cause car-sized problems.

“We Only Drive It in the Neighborhood”

That is probably the number one thing we hear.

The problem is that neighborhood driving is exactly where liability can sneak up on you. When you are driving a golf cart through a neighborhood, you are sharing space with pedestrians, kids on bikes, parked cars, mailboxes, landscaping, other golf carts, dogs, driveways, and yes, cars.

It does not take much for a fun little ride to turn into an expensive claim.  If your teenager bumps a parked vehicle, who pays for the damage?  If your golf cart hits a child on a bike, who pays the medical bills?  If a guest borrows your cart and causes an accident, are you covered?

Those are not scare tactics. Those are real life scenarios that we see all the time.  In actuality, the answer is not always, “My homeowners policy will take care of it.”

Your Homeowners Policy May Not Cover What You Think It Covers

A lot of people assume their homeowners policy automatically covers golf cart accidents. Sometimes there may be limited coverage, especially to cover physical damage to the cart but sometimes there may not be coverage at all. It depends on the policy, where the cart is used, how it is used, who is driving it, and whether it has been modified. It also depends on if it is a liability issue off your property or not.

Coverage on your own property may be different than coverage on a public street. Coverage on a golf course may be different than coverage in your neighborhood. Coverage for an unmodified golf cart may be different than coverage for one that has been lifted, upgraded, or made faster. You get the idea...it depends.

This is why guessing is a bad plan.

We would much rather answer the question before there is a claim than after someone gets hurt or property is damaged.

What About on the Golf Course?

Golf course liability matters too.  Most people think about golf cart accidents as something that happens on the road, but they can happen on the course just as easily. Carts tip. People fall out. Someone backs into another cart. A passenger gets injured or someone runs over a toe. You damage course property. You hit another golfer’s equipment.

While the course may have its own insurance, that does not mean you are personally off the hook for everything you do while operating the cart.  If you own the cart, you need to know how your policy responds when it is being used at a golfing facility.  If you rent or borrow a cart, you should still understand where your personal liability protection begins and ends.

Street Legal Does Not Mean Properly Insured

Some cities allow golf carts on certain streets, but the rules are local and specific. Many cities require things like a licensed driver, age restrictions, lights, reflectors, slow-moving vehicle emblems, registration, inspections, and liability insurance.

Just because you see other people driving golf carts around town does not mean every cart is legal, properly insured, or being operated within the rules.  Even if your city allows golf carts on certain roads, that does not automatically mean your current insurance policy covers it.  Legal to drive and properly insured are two different questions.

What Can Golf Cart Insurance Cover?

Depending on the policy and the carrier, golf cart insurance may be able to include liability coverage if you injure someone or damage someone else’s property. It may also include medical payments coverage, physical damage coverage for the cart itself, comprehensive coverage for things like theft, vandalism, fire, or weather, and collision coverage if the cart is damaged in an accident.

Coverage options vary, and not every cart qualifies the same way. A standard golf cart, a lifted cart, a low-speed vehicle, and a modified cart may all be treated differently.  That is exactly why it is worth having us look at it.

The Biggest Mistake Is Assuming It Is “No Big Deal”

Golf carts are fun, and we are not here to ruin that.  We are here to make sure one fun ride does not become a financial mess.

If your family uses a golf cart in the neighborhood, at the lake, around a private community, or on the course, it is worth asking a few simple questions.

  • Is the cart covered?

  • Where is it covered?

  • Who is allowed to drive it?

  • Is it covered on public roads?

  • Is it covered on the golf course?

  • Do we have liability coverage if someone gets hurt?

  • Is the cart itself covered if it is stolen, damaged, or totaled?

If you do not know the answers, that is okay. That is what we are here for. Before you load up the kids, head to the pool, or cruise around the neighborhood, let us review your coverage. A golf cart may feel like a toy, but the liability is very real. At Shepherd Insurance Group, we guide. You decide.
